Trees and Shrubs

Nyssa sylvatica Red Red WineA stunning Tupelo ( Nyssa ) bright red new spring and subsequent growth on an elegant medium sized deciduous hardy tree. Pendent ( weeping ) branch tip.

This olive is only hardy in the mildest areas of the british isles where it forms a large shrub or small tree axillary racemes of fragrant, small, white flowers in late summer.

A handsome, large shrub of dense habit. Leaves elliptic or oblong-lanceolate, thick and rigid, up to 18cm long, edged with stout, often hooked, spiny teeth. Flowers in autumn, sweetly scented. Thrives in sun or shade. A splendid evergreen worthy of more extensive planting.

Osmanthus decorusShrub with perfumed flowers China. Hardy , some afternoon protection in hot dry position.

Osmanthus delavayi A great low spreading evergreen shrub. In early spring masses of perfumed small white flowers adorn the branches. I found these on the side of the road in Western Yunnan China. We grow three different selections all wild collected forms. The form here is much lower and spreading compared to Heaven Scent and Pearly Gates. These were growing in a cluster in an open site and looked superb tight bushes in mass flower, if I hadn't been watching these would not have made it into commerce. The variation within a wild species is often huge and I found similar variety in wild michelia yunnanensis. Often the European/British plant hunters introduced plants that were inferior and became the known form in western gardens, this opens a new wave of possibilities for future gardens as better selections are made.

(Sweet Olive) Large shrub with finely toothed leaves. Flowers deliciously perfumed in Summer-Autumn, smelling of apricots. Used in perfuming tea. Young shoots often burn in heavy frost.

A small tree or shrub bearing clusters of creamy orange blossoms. Great fragrance which is typically released at night. Large dark green leaves. Makes a great backdrop for other smaller plants.
