An unusual tree of medium size with long, weeping branches, often hanging down the trunk. Originated as a seedling in france about 1835.
A dwarf cultivar with horizontally spreading branches, rigid branchlets and shoerted leaves.
A dwarf shrub of compact but irregular habit, leaves attractive greyish blue. A wonderful plant, the most outstanding dwarf silver fir, suitable for a large rock garden or as an isolated lawn specimen.
A large tree which can reach 40m or more in the wild. The comparatively broad, stiff, leathery leaves, 1.5-4cm long, are yellowish-green above, with two greyish green,stomatal bands beneath. They are conspicuously notched on the lateral branches, densely crowded, with a V-shaped parting, on the upper sides of the shoots, loosely pectinate below. The cones are 8-15cm long and are yellowish green when young; the bracts are slightly exserted.
Southwest Sichuan,Northwest Yunnan and southeast Xizang(Tibet).It has stout,densely hairy shoots and bracts of the seed cones are longer exserted than in var.forrestii.
A small. slow-growing tree of neat habit. Leaves 1-2cm long, dark green above, gleaming white beneath,radially aranged on strong shoots, loosely arranged on others. An interesting species, producing its violet-purple, cylindrical cones, 5-7.5cm long, even on specimens only 50cm high. A tall-growing but very poor form is in cultivation.
