Chequer-barked juniper, alligator juniper. Particularly conspicuous as a young plant when it is the most vividly silver-blue of all junipers. Not easy to cultivate coming as it does from dry mountain slopes of the SW USA and NE Mexico.

Shrub.Full sun to light shade.Frost hardy.Evergreen.0.3m tall, 1m wide.The needles turn a bronze/purple in winter (cold climates only), otherwise its an all year round dense groundcover that provides foliage interest, texture and shape.This is a very hardy plant that can handle frosts, pollution and neglect.

A prostrate shrub resembling J.rigida subsp.conferta but with flatter needles and dense foliage this is neither prickly nor pungent when crushed.It is an attractive grass-green ground cover and is one of the feew conifers that will fall vertically down over rocks.Only a few cm high,it will be 70-100cm across in ten years.J.taxifolia was named in 1838.A population of prostrate coastal plants in the wild were named J.lutchuensis by Koidzumi in 1918, J.conferta var.rigida by E.H. Wilson ex Nakai in 1922, J.taxifolia var.lutchuensis by Sarake in 1962 and considered as J.taxifolia var.maritima by lewis in 1992.
