A fast-growing, large to very large broadly conical tree primarily of economic importance though impressive as a single specimen feature in an arboretum or estate. A rare, small, slow-growing tree of stiff, upright habit when young. Small, green, scale-like leaves are borne in 4 ranks, giving the shoots a quadrangular appearance. Cones ovoid, 8-13mm long, with 4, woody, brown scales. This remarkable tree, a native of chile, has proved hardy in the British Isles. In the wild it occurs further south than any other conifer.
