A large, vigorous tree with reddish shoots. Leaves 2-3.5cm long, sea green, broader then those of L. decidua. Cones ovoid, 2-3cm long with scales turned outward and downward at the tips. A commonly planted larch used extensively for reforestation, withstanding exposure well. The reddish twigs appear to create a purple haze above a plantation on a sunny afternoon in late winter. Densely-branched erect shrub or small tree growing to heights of 5 meters, branches are often small and rigid with leaves arranged spirally and fully appressed to the stem.
