Bark brown to grey, smooth, except for scattered flakes.Cones about 8-10.5 cm diameter each with about 340-440 scales per cone.Male cones about 4-10 cm long with more than 500 scales per cone, generally persisting on the ground beneath mature trees. Female cones with about 340-440 scales per cone.
A 15-20m tall tree native to New Caledonia where it grows in the mountains at altitudes of 200-700m.The leaves are opposite, lanceolate to ellipic,10cm long and 2.5cm wide, glossy dark green above and lighter beneath. The cones are globose to pear-shaped,12x10cm.Hardiness zone 10.
It is an evergreen tree growing to 40 m (130 ft) tall and 1 m (3 ft 3 in) diameter at breast height. The inner bark and resin from the trunk of the tree is reddish, which can be a good defining character because it differs from Araucaria araucana , which has brown bark inner and white resin. It prefers well drained, slightly acidic soil but will tolerate almost any soil type provided drainage is good.
(Monkey Puzzle) Evergreen Tree , growing up to 40 metres tall, and the trunk diameter up to 2 meters. Produces edible seeds, simialr to pine nuts. The hardiest species of the conifer genus and because of the age of the tree, its sometimes described as a 'living fossil.' Country of Origin: southern Chile and western Argentina.
(Bunya Pine) Producing edible pine cones with flavour similar to a chestnut, the cones are about the size of a football. Not to be confused with the genus of pinus, belongs to the same genus as ‘monkey puzzle’, and can be referred to as ‘false monkey puzzle.’ Growth habit is 30 -45 meters in height. Country of Origin: Australia.
Very large narrow tree often with a lean towards the top. New Caledonia. An almost spectacularly columnar tree 40-60m tall, native to S New Caledonia and the nearby Isle of Pines and Loyalty Island whre it is found as pure stands on the coastal coral soils. It is the only species of araucaria that grows on calcareous soils. The columnar shape is maintained by the re-growth of side branches after they have been shed or removed by cyclones. The juvenile leaves are triangular to lanceolate,6-12mm long and 3-5mm wide;the adult ones shorter and densely overlapping, producing a cord-like branch tip.The Cones are ellipsoid,10-15x7-11cm.Not hardy in cool temperate regions.Hardiness zone 9.
Large native tree eventually forming large tufts of foliage at the branch tips.A 45-60m high tree with dense rounded crown. It is native to coastal northeastern Australia and the island of New Guinea. The leaves are spirally arranged, the juvenile ones narrowly lanceolate,8-25mm long and the adult ones shorter, incurved and densely overlapping, green to blue-green.The cones are void,globose,10x7.5cm.
Large tree having flattened foliage on horizontal branches. Excellent near the coast.A tree growing 50-70m tall with a narrowly conical crown in its native Norfolk Island. The branches are in whorls of 4-7.Juvenile leaves are soft and awl-shaped,10-20mm long, bowed inwards and not overlapping, adult leaves are shorter, almost scale-like,forming a cord-like branch tip.The cones are spherical,12x12cm. The Norfolk Island pine has long been cultivated as an ornamental tree in wamr climates and as a house plant in temperate ones.Hardiness zone 9.
It is a very large evergreen tree(the tallest in New Guinea, and the tallest species in its family), growing to 50–80 m tall, exceptionally to 90 m, with a trunk up to 3 m diameter. The branches are horizontal, produced in whorls of five or six.
