A dwarf, slow-growing cultivar with wide-spreading branches. Leaves 1-2.5cm long, light yellow above, pale yellowish white beneath.
Country of Origin: Spain. A large tree selected for its striking blue-grey leaves.
Leaves suffused golden yellow. Usually a medium-sized to large shrub or small tree of rather poor constitution.Formal symmetrical to conical tree with lime-sulphur green-gold needles and new growth rich Gold. Older foliage green to Silver-Blue which contrasts wonderfully with the overlay of gilt-gold. Firs with some exceptions , prefer non-arid rainfall areas with some cool in winter ( can handle frost , but they don't have to have it .
The noble fir is native to the W USA:northwest California,Oregon and Washington(Cascade Range and parts of the Coast range).In the wild it grows at an altitude of 60-2,700m and reaches 60m to a magnificent 90m where there is adequate spring moisture.The needles are bluish green above and glaucous white beneath,up-curved,25-35mm long and 1.5mm wide,with rounded tip. The seed cones are barrel shaped and narrowed at the top,14-25x7-8cm,green,tinged with red when young,ripening to light grey-brown with orange bracts.The tree grows well in sunny areas and prefers bare acidic mountain peat.
Blue Noble Fir ( also Red Fir or Christmas Tree ) is a handsome relatively narrow tree with beautiful blue-grey needles ( above & below ). Native of north western USA. In autumn the upright up to 25cm blue cones are stunning , turning red-brown with maturity. Attractive silver grey smooth bark , becomes red & brown and rough fissured on mature trees. Cascade Range and Coast Range mountains of northwest California and western Oregon and Washington in the USA. Firs generally like our higher rainfall south eastern & southern regions , there are some firs with higher dry-heat tolerances but do your research.
Dwarf low growing “Noble Fir”shrub, with sweeping horizontal branching of exquisite silver-blue. 1x1.5metres in 10-15 years.
Sacred fir. A rare tree of small to medium size with down-sweeping stems. Leaves 1.5-3.5cm long, peculiarly tapered and curved, dark green above, marked with 2 greyish stomatal bands beneath, densely arranged and forward-pointing on the upper sides of the brachlets, pectinate below. Cones 10-15cm long, bluish when young; bracts exserted and reflexed. In mexico the branches are used to decorate mission buildings during religious festivals. Reasonably lime-tolerant, it grew at the SHHG for more the 50 years where the specimen reached 23.5m(2013.
Flaky Fir is common in the South Eastern Tibetan plateau at altitudes over 3200-4400 metres ( 12000 feet approximately ). Peeling deep brown shaggy bark and rich purple seed cones , on a relatively narrow small-medium evergreen tree.
The black kauri or blue kauri. A rare Kauri tree in North East Queensland Mountains with limited endemic populations. Somewhat flaky. Sap oozes out from any scars on the trunk and side branches. Leaves lanceolate with pointed tips and distinctive veining . The male cones up to 3 centimetres long. The female cones are larger starting green , with many scales . From North Queensland mountains, 750 to 1,500 metres (2,460 to 4,920 ft) above sea level.
Kauri pine. An exotic-looking tree with thick, spreading branches. Leaves varieable: on young trees they are narrowly lanceolate, 2.5-8cm long, spreading, leathery and lime-green in colour; on old trees they are shorter, oblong and sessile. Young plants are bronze or purple-flushed. Cones 6-8cm across, sub-globose.
