Edgeworthia chrysantha Enjoy the clove-like fragrance from this beauty. Papery cinnamon coloured bark which has been used in Japan for the production of banknotes. Very flexible young stems which can literally be tied in knots. Best loved for its yellow, fragrant tubular flowers which are covered in silky white hairs.

Origin: China

Edgeworthia Chrysantha Red Dragon Edgeworthia genus shares key characteristics of papery bark, and fragrant flowers and handsome foliage. 'Red Dragon' is a rounded bushy , but open growing shrub. It has masses of vibrant red to orange nodding flowers , which are covered in silky white hairs which make the plant appear frosty when in bud.

Origin: Nepal and China

Edgeworthia chrysantha Grandiflora Larger yellow flowers than chrysantha and the added bonus of amazing Perfume. Daphne-like flower heads, which considering how closely related isn't a surprise. Flowers sit more upright than species form, also bigger foliage and thicker stems. Japanese Paper Daphne.

Edgeworthia gardenii Large growing evergreen shrub with yellow flower heads. As with other members of this genus, it has a lovely fruity fragrance. Grows up to 4m.

Origin: Nepal and China

Elaeagnus macrophyllaCommonly called oleaster. Large, spreading evergreen shrub. Young branchlets are covered in silvery white scales. White flowers appear in clusters but can be sparse. The ovoid red fruits are edible.

Origin: Korea and Japan

An evergreen shrub growing up to 3m, considered quite hardy and is widely grown as a loose hedge or back of the garden bed. Silver foliage and fast growing. 

Origin: Japan

Elaeagnus pungens Vigorous spreafing evergreen shrub up to 5 metres but often trimmed to form a fine fedge or screen. Leaves green and shiny above , dull white speckled brown below with rolled down edges. Fragrant white flowers in Autumn.

A slow growing evergreen shrub with narrow creamy leaves bearing dark green margins and silvery brown undersides. Small silvery fragrant flowers in autumn. Small fruits first brown and then red, are attractive to birds.

elaeagnus rodundifolius © 2014Also known as the Japanese silverberry, autumn olive or umbellate oleaster. A compact and low growing habit. The oleaster fruit is a key inclusion in many traditional cultures such as in Iran. 

Origin: Asia

elaegnus x ebbingeiCommonly called oleaster.  A large, bushy and rounded shrub. Leaf surfaces turn dark green with age and silver grey beneath. Creamy white flowers that are intensely fragrant.
