Conifers

 A large tree with deeply fissured, dark brown bark and a dense head of powerful branches. Leaves in 3s, to 15cm long, bright green, densely crowded on the branchlets. Cones to 15cm long, borne in whorls along the branches, often remaining intact for many years. An attractive, rapid-growing tree for mild inland and coastal areas. excellent for withstanding sea winds, USA(Monterey Peninsula, California where it is confined to just three sea cliffs.

pinus radiata goldie © A very dense globose plant with golden yellow foliage.Raised before 1993 as a seedling form 'Gold Nugget' by P.C. Nitschke,Australia.The cultivar name has also been used under P.strobus.Duplicate names in the same genus are not acceptable.The earliest validly published name has priority and the later name should be changed.In this case,it is not clear which name has priority.

A tall tree 30-50m or taller found in the monsoon belt of the Himalaya:from Pakistan to NE India,Aranuchal Pradesh,Assam and Kameng District,at elevation of 450-2,300m.The crown is open and domed with long spreading to ascending branches.The buds are ovoid,1-2cm long.The needles are in fascicles of 3,light green and thin,flexible,slightly drooping,25-35cm long and 1.2-1.7mm wide,persisting for only 1-3 years,although in particularly dry situations they become deciduous.The pollen-cones are densely clustered,ovoid-oblong,13-15mm long,yellowish brown.The seed-cones are solitary or in whorls of 2-5,broadly ovoid or ovoid-conical,10-17x7-12cm,heavy and persistent green,ripening to shiny brown or grey-brown.

Weymouth pine, white pine. A large tree, of conical habit when young, later developing a rounded head. Leaves in 5s, to 15cm long, somewhat glaucous-green. Cones to 20cm long, pendent on slender stalks liberally flecked with resin. Once the most commonly planted of the 5-needled pines,due to its ornamental habit and fast growth.A tree to 40-50(-67)m in height native to E North America,south to S Mexico and Guatemala.

Pinus Strobus Contorta A curious form, developing twisted branches and densely set, conspicuously twisted leaves.A plant with a twisted trunk,ascending twisted branches and densely arranged,distinctly twisted,blue-green needles 5-8cm long.In ten years 4.5x2m.Reported from Seneca Park,Rochester,NY,USA before 1932.

A slow growing globose plant with distincly blue-green needles spreading irregularly in various direction.Annual growth 5-10cm.Found as a witches'broom by William Gotelli in Macopin,New Jersy,USA.

A compact globose plant with silvery blue needles.In ten years 1.5x1.5m,Raised c.1970 as a witches'broom seedling by Alfred Fordham,MA,USA.

A form with long, drooping branches.A tall,sometimes multi-stemmed plant with with ascending and widely spreading branches drooping partly to the ground.Foliage silvery green.Usually grown with an initially staked leader and weeping side branches.In ten years 3.5x2m Recorded by Nelson(1866).

A dense slow-growing,rounded selection with slightly flat top.Foliage is an attractive silvery blue-green, the silver enhanced by a position in shade. A seedling from a witches'broom,selected by S.waxman before 1978.In ten years 60x90cm.
