arbutus canariensisA striking tree displaying bold foliage to 15cm in length and white flowers for a large part of the year. The bark is very showy being dark orange in most seasons but with extreme heat and sun it can become mid purple. Bark is shed annually.It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

Arbutus glandulosaAmongst the most ornamental of small trees. From Mexico, this variety is famed for its beautiful bark with cinnamon-red tones. The tree also produces white bell-shaped flowers with a pink blush, followed by fruit. The glossy dark green leaves have a serrated edge.Prefers a humus rich, well drained soil in full sun.

Arbutus unedo Pink PearlsThe Pink Flowering Irish Strawberry Tree’ is a small tree with pink-red flowers and bright orange fruits throughout the summer period. The cinnamon coloured trunk and dark green leaves complete the package.Full Sun, Partial Shade.

Arbutus unedoThis bushy evergreen tree is referred to as the Irish Strawberry Tree. The name reflects the characteristics of the orange strawberry-like fruits. The word ‘unedo’ means ‘I eat one’. This doesn’t refer to the fact they are poisonous, simply that they are so bland you would only want to try one! A natural distribution across southern Spain and Portugal.Full Sun, Partial Shade.

arbutusxandrachnoidesA stunning evergreen feature tree that can grow up to 15m. Rich glossy green foliage and interesting multiple twisted trunks. The rusty-brown bark disrobes during winter to reveal green new bark underneath.  Listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.

Xalapensis, commonly know as the Texas madrone or naked indian tree, growing to 7meters tall. This multi-trunked evergreen tree, peeling bark to reveal polished red inner bark, dark green leaves, with a slit red ting. Small white bell-shaped flowers appear in spring, followed by orange turning red fruit. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers dry or moist soil.

aronia arbutifolia autumn colour © 2013 The Aronias are hardy deciduous shrubs that offer striking autumn colour. The red foliage is great for adding impact to the garden. This Red Chokeberry produces fragrant white flowers during spring and numerous red berries. Usually grows 2-4m in height. Best known for its glossy red berries and scarlet foliage. Prefers sun to partial shade. Autumn colour pictured.Prefers sun to partial shade.

aronia mekanocarpa autumn colour © 2013A native to eastern North America, rarely exceeding a height of 1m. This variety spreads readily by root sprouts. White flowers followed by black delicious berries that contain the highest concentration of Antioxidants of any berry . This deciduous and hardy shrub has glorious autumn colour.Prefers sun to partial shade.

aronia prunifolia © 2013Known as the Purple Chokeberry. A deciduous shrub growing up to 3m. Dark green leaves which turn orange, purple and red with the seasons. Clusters of white flowers in spring followed by spherical purple-black berries. Autumn colour pictured.Prefers sun to partial shade.

astelia chatamica © 2013A distinctive stripey leafed plant with beautiful silvery foliage. Prefers a well drained soil and can tolerate dry spells once established. A great dramatic garden feature, ideal for decorative pots.
