Trees and Shrubs

An enchanting small shrub with beautiful yellow tubular flowers that droop from the stems. Well suited to containers but protect from heavy frosts. Part shade.

Origin: Himalayas

Commonly as the red kauri, a medium-sized to large evergreen tree, the leaves are in decussate opposite pairs.  The cones are globe like, and 10 cm diameter.Full sun. Height: Up to 40 Meters. Origin: Queensland, Australia

Alberta Magna An impressive shrub when in fruit and flower, often treasured by collectors. Shiny evergreen foliage makes a great backdrop for the brilliant displays of red tubular flowers. These are followed by small ribbed fruit which remain colourful for a long period. Full sun, or slight shade. Not frost tolerant.

albizia julibrissin © bron anderson(Persian Silk Tree) Known by a wide variety of common names such as the Persian silk tree and pink silk tree. Named after an Italian nobleman Filippo degli Albizzi who introduced it to Europe in the mid-18th century. A 5-12m tree with a broad crown of branches. full sun to light shade, although the best flowering result occurs in full sun.

Origin: South West / Easten Asia.

amelanchier canandensis autumn colour © 2013 A deciduous shrub or small tree with a fastigiated crown. White flowers are produced in spring. The fruit is a pome and dark purple when ripe. It is sweet and edible. Often used as a medicinal plant. Sometimes made into bonsai. Autumn colour pictured.Full sun to part shade. It is tolerant of a somewhat wide range of soils.

Andromeda polifoliaAndromeda polifolia, commonly known as the bog-rosemary. This small evergreen shrub growing to 20cm -40cm tall. The dark green foilage is off set by the white to pink bell like flowers that cluster on its branchs. Flowering late spring - early summer. Loves wet areas, ie. ponds and marsh land.Full sun or partial shade.

Anopterus glandulosa ( pink form southern pink ) Native Laurel or Tasmanian Laurel. Perfumed woodland shrubs with flowers borne in terminal racemes in spring. Both white & pink forms reach barely 2 metres in gardens. In native rainforest ( high rainfall ) of Tasmania they can become small trees when old. Require reliable, regular spring & summer watering.Moderately snow and frost hardy. Tolerates shade and requires a cool position.

Anopterus macleayanusThe Queensland laurel or Macleay laurel can grow up to 15m and features long leaves. The flowers occur between October and December in its native range of Queensland and New South Wales.Morning sun afternoon shade.

aralia elata silver umbrellaThis is a variegated form of the Japanese angelica tree. Grows into a large shrub or small tree with a spiny trunk and suckers. Creates a tropical look in the garden with its large frond-like leaves and billowy creamy flowers. Full to partial sun.
