gunnera manicata © 2013(Giant Rhubarb) A large clump-forming perennial with very impressive foliage. The diameter of the leaves can reach over 4 foot. Grows best in damp conditions but dislikes winter and the cold and wet. Believed to be edible when young, however there is no direct relation to rhubarb.

Origin: South America 

An ancient plant with its origins in southern Chile. Very large leaves and grows up to 2m in height. Used both as an ornamental and an edible.

Hedychium coccineum Tara2An upright herbaceous perennial with stems of foliage up to 2m in height, lance-shaped leaves 30-40cm in length. Beautifully Fragrant orange flowers with dark orange stamens borne in dense terminal racemes up to 25cm tall blooming in late summer into Autumn. Hedychium are Cold climate Ornamental Gingers , dormant in winter.

Hedychium coronariumA white perfumed cold climate , ornamental ginger. Vigorous and free flowering large white upright flower heads.

hedychium var urophyllum © 2014 Ginger to 1.5m. Large broad leaves. Flower head an upright cone from which intensely chromium yellow, scented yellow flowers emerge. Flowers and grows better in cool areas then common white "butterfly ginger".

Hedychium gardnerianum(Kahili ginger, Kahila garland-lily, or ginger lily in Australia. Endemic to Himalayas of India, Nepal, and Bhutan. A clumping perennial 2-2.4 metres tall , that will naturalize a garden bed. Long bright green foliage on tall stems. The very fragrant pale yellow and red flowers in tall dense spikes , above the foliage. Flowering heavily at the end of summer. In cooler moister areas they can grow in full sun , although in slight or heavier shade with some water will be far more attractive in the landscape. Note these Gingers are cold climate hardy , compared to their more tropical relatives & perfect in southern Australian winters.

hedychium greenii © 2013Considered the only Hedychium with significant colour in the foliage. Leaves are glossy dark green above and maroon underneath. A great foliage plant. Striking flowers appear in late summer and are a bright orange-red.

With a humourous common name of 'Pig Butt Arum' this plant is rare, but not elegant. The flower is said to resemble the backside of a flatulent pig both in image and fragrance.
