Magnolia

Magnoila DealbataThis cloud forest species is characterized by its large leaves which can reach up to100cm in length and large white flowers. This tree was thought to be extinct at one point, but a population was rediscovered in the late 1970’s. It is sometimes used as an ornamental, a source of timber, and as a traditional medicine for heart problems.

Magnolia delavayiMagnolia delavayi is also known by the common names of Chinese Evergreen Magnolia or Delavay's Magnolia. It was named after Father Delavay, a French Catholic missionary in China, who collected it. The fragrant blooms are cup-shaped, 15–25 cm broad and are creamy white to in colour.

Magnolia denudataOne of the most beloved magnolias, Magnolia denduata is a stunning specimen tree with pure white flowers and a delightful subtle fragrance. This creamy white flowering tree has long been regarded as a symbol of purity. Ideal for small gardens courtyards and driveway plantings.  Will grow well in most climates tolerating all but the coldest temperatures although they do perform best in full sun.

Magnolia grandifloraThis variety is commonly referred to as the Southern Magnolia. Reaching approximately 25m in height, it is a striking evergreen tree with large, dark green leaves up to 20 cm in length. Large, white, fragrant flowers are add to its ornamental value. Magnolia grandiflora is widely cultivated in warmer areas around the world. The timber is hard and heavy, and has been used commercially to make furniture, pallets, and veneer.

An evergreen medium tree with an upright narrow habit and dense foliage. Large glossy ovate wavy leaves. Large fragrant flowers are cup-shaped and creamy white with 9-10 petals up to 10 in. across.

MagnoliaLittleGemA popular dwarf variety which reaches maturity at approximately 4m in height. Lovely creamy white perfumed flowers during spring and summer. Frost tolerant once established and grows well in most parts of Australia.

A rare dwarf variety, Harold Poole is a lovely large shrub with dark glossy leaves that are narrower than other varieties. The flowers are medium in size, cup-shaped and creamy white in colour. The fragrance is an additional selling point. Harold Poole withstands wind well and will grow to a height of around 4m. A sound choice for privacy screening.

Magnoila grand TeddybearA very popular Magnolia across Australia today. This evergreen variety will reach a height of around 4m. Rounded, cup-shaped leaves are held tightly on the tree and make for a dense appearance, hence this variety is popular for screening and privacy applications. ‘Teddy Bear’ is named for the furry undersides of its leaves. As with many evergreen varieties, this one also produces gloriously large white flowers. Prefers a position in part shade and a well-drained soil, however this is a hardy selection that will grow in most locations.

Magnoila kobusThis beautiful deciduous tree grows to approximately 12m in height and blooms in early spring. The floral displays is marked by a profusion of white-tinged pink goblet to saucer-shaped blossoms. Performs best in moist, well-drained soils in sun or partial shade. Magnolias do not like wet feet. Prune minimally in late summer to maintain a healthy framework.
