Ethnobotanical

Michelia doltsopaThis popular evergreen tree is prized for the showy display of Magnolia-like flowers during late winter at a time when very few trees are flowering. Makes an effective living hedge or screen and is a stunning sight when in full bloom. Can grow to 10m in height.

Origin: East Asia

Michelia x albaAn attractive evergreen tree, popular for its fragrance and oil. In South East Asia it is said to bring good luck. Produces magnificent highly perfumed cream coloured flowers from spring to autumn.

Myrtus communisAlso called the true myrtle, and is widespread in the Mediterranean region.  Grows to a small tree with aromatic leathery leaves. The white flowers are followed by fleshy purple-black berries. Plant in full sun for best results.is used in the islands of Sardinia and Corsica for an aromatic liqueur called “Mirto”, ( made by macerating its Berries in alcohol ) ... An evergreen, dense bushy shrub , with glossy dark green leaves aromatic when crushed.Fluffy cream flowers in spring.Blue/black berries follow the flowers and are edible.Makes a great formal hedge, screen or ornamental shrub. Origin: Europe

nyssa sylcatica © 2013(Tupelo) A slow growing species but displays nice form. Popular as a park specimen or for larger gardens. Spectacular autumn displays of yellows, reds and oranges.

Osmanthus fragrans(Sweet Olive) Large shrub with finely toothed leaves. Flowers deliciously perfumed in Summer-Autumn, smelling of apricots. Used in perfuming tea. Young shoots often burn in heavy frost.In China Osmanthus flowers are infused with green or black tea leaves creating a scented tea (桂花茶, guìhuāchá).Osmanthus jam is an ingredient in a type of gruel called chátāng (茶汤), added to sorghum or millet flour and sugar with boiling water. Osmanthus fragrans (Sweet Olive) has massed small white flowers , we also grow Osmanthus fragrans aurantiacus with Gold flowers. I imported Osmanthus fragrans Orange Supreme ( gold ) & Live Oak Gold (yellow) also.Large shrubs with finely toothed leaves. Flowers deliciously perfumed in Summer-Autumn, smelling of apricots. (European Pear) The European pear Pyrus communis is also known as common pear. Requires some winter chilling to produce fruit. Pear wood is also used extensively for the manufacture of musical instruments such as flutes and recorders. Also popular for carving and furniture.

sambucus nigra © 2013(Elderberry) Commonly referred to as Elderberry.  A lovely fragrant shrub with white flowers followed by dark purple berries. Often used for preserves and jams. Grows to around 3m x 3m. Great purple foliage.
