Ethnobotanical

Magnolia DenudataOne of the most beloved of all magnolias due to the exquisite lily shape of the white blossoms. Today, very old gnarled specimens can be found in Chinese temples and other public places throughout China.

  A deciduduous tree that flowers late in winter or early spring, before leaf growth.Produces small white flowers every few years.

This cloud forest species is characterized by its large leaves which can reach up to100cm in length and large white flowers. This tree was thought to be extinct at one point, but a population was rediscovered in the late 1970’s. It is sometimes used as an ornamental, a source of timber, and as a traditional medicine for heart problems.

Origin: Mexico

This variety is commonly referred to as the Southern Magnolia. Reaching approximately 25m in height, it is a striking evergreen tree with large, dark green leaves up to 20 cm in length. Large, white, fragrant flowers are add to its ornamental value. Magnolia grandiflora is widely cultivated in warmer areas around the world. The timber is hard and heavy, and has been used commercially to make furniture, pallets, and veneer.

Magnoila kobusThis beautiful deciduous tree grows to approximately 12m in height and blooms in early spring. The floral displays is marked by a profusion of white-tinged pink goblet to saucer-shaped blossoms. Performs best in moist, well-drained soils in sun or partial shade. Magnolias do not like wet feet. Prune minimally in late summer to maintain a healthy framework.

 (Japanese Bigleaf Magnolia or Japanese whitebark magnolia)Medium-sized deciduous tree 15-30m tall,with slate grey bark.Flowers are large and cup shaped 15-20cm diameter, with 9-12 creamy, fleshy tepals, red stamens; they have a strong scent, and are produced in early summer after the leaves expand.
 
 (Houpu Magnolia or Magnolia-bark)Deciduous tree growing 20m in height.The bark is thick and brown, but does not fissure.Fragrant flowers, 10-15cm wide,with 9–12 (rarely to 17) white tepals, and appear from May to June.
 Deciduous tree 20m in height, with pale grayish brown to blackish brown, exfoliating bark.Pale yellowish brown young twigs.Dark green leaves.Flowers are frangrant and appear before the leaves erect, cup-shaped, 15 cm wide, with 12-14 tepals that are white to rosy-red. The fruit is a cylindric aggregate of follicles 6–18 cm long.
  

magnolia virginiana ©Magnolia virginiana, commonly called sweet bay magnolia, is native to the southeastern United States north along the Atlantic coastline. Its features cup-shaped, sweetly lemony fragrant, creamy white flowers. Blooms appear in mid-spring and sometimes throughout the summer. Cone-like fruits with bright red seeds mature in autumn.

Michelia champaca A truly iconic Asian magnolia. Michelia champaca. My garden is awash with perfume at this time of year from this exquisite tree. This evergreen tree boasts masses of sweetly perfumed, chromium yellow flowers from summer to autumn. Slender, glossy bright green leaves droop from horizontal branches. This is a tree variety that may reach up to 10metres+ in height.
