Ethnobotanical

Country of Origin: South America. A genus of seven species of flowering plants in the family Solanaceae. They are woody trees or shrubs, with pendulous flowers, and have no spines on their fruit. Their large, fragrant flowers give them their common name of angel's trumpets, a name sometimes used for the closely related genus Datura. (Datura differs from Brugmansia in that they are herbaceous bushes, with erect rather than pendulous flowers - and most have spines on their fruit).

camellia sinensis(Tea) Known as the 'Tea Plant' of commerce, this variety has small white nodding flowers in Autumn and 6 - 8 cm rather corrugated leaves. A second form grows larger, and has larger leaves.Full sun to part shade.

(Turkish Hazel) Cone shaped tree, with oval shaped, shallowly lobed, dark green leaves, which turn yellow in Autumn.  Produces edible nuts, enclosed in deeply fluffy shells, nuts ripen in Autumn.  Height 6 meters – 5 metres wide.

cussonia paniculata © 2014  A large evergreen tree growing up to 5m in height. Large bold and textured grey foliage. Also known as the Mountain Cabbage Tree , hailing from Southern Africa ... A pachycaul succulent on the basis of having a swollen stem base or tuber this forms early in plants from seed. Roots are also thick gnarled and swollen. Mountain Cabbage is relatively slow growing. Very large, digitately compound, cabbage blue leaves . Foliage color accentuated by the thick waxy layers on the leaves, help protecting them against severe frost . The leaves have 7-9, but sometimes up to 13 leaflets, from the end of each long stalk. The leaflets are up to 30 cm in length and can potentially reach 60 cm. The leaflets of some forms are more deeply lobed. New leaves are brighter green in a spring flush at the ends of branches.

Desfontainia SpinosaA large evergreen shrub with prickly holly like foliage. Flowers scarlet and yellow tubular and very showy in late summer. Perfers cool moist or shaded sites.

Origin: Chile

A genus of flowering plants that consists mostly of shrubs or small trees. The first, Fushsia triphylla, was discovered on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola(Haiti and the Dominican Repuplic) about 1696–1697 by the French Minim monk and botanist, Charles Plumier, during his third expedition to the Greater Antilles. He named the new genus after the renowned German botanist Leonhart Fuchs(1501–1566).

The species vary from low, ground-hugging shrubs less than 10 cm (3.9 in) tall, up to 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) tall, or, in the case of G.fragrantissima from the Himalaya, even a small tree up to 5–6 m (16–20 ft) tall.Evergreen.

Hamamellis virginiana(Witch Hazel) Shrubby tree. Pale yellow flowers have a sweet penetrating scent in Summer - Autumn. Yellow Autumn tones.

Country of Origin: Florida, U.S.A

Ilex paraguariensis(Yerba Mate) Country of Origin: Florida, U.S.A.Yerba-Mate is made in South America in most countries as a beverage , particularly Paraguay and Argentina where it it is the national holly Tea ... It is prepared by steeping the dry ground leaves of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis ) or in Portuguese erva-mate in hot water and is shared around through a metal straw from a hollow calabash gourd. The straw is a bombilla in Spanish, bomba in Portuguese, and a bombija or masassa (type of straw) in Arabic ... It is apparently popular now in Serbia and Lebanon ... The straw is traditionally cast in silver ... I find a few leaves steeped in hot water quite a pleasant tea ... And for something quite different Peumus boldus ( native to Chile ) makes another South American Tea Boldo which is a more exotic strong flavour too me ,but also enjoyable ... Often Boldo is Mixed with Yerbe-Mate to soften its strength .... The leaves of BoIdo can be used like Bay leaf ( as can some other plants of this family) ........ I have yet to find myself a Calabash Gourd fruit (Lagenaria siceraria) for serving Yerbe-Mate but it does sound fun

liquidambar styraciflua ©Known as Sweetgums in North America. Large and fast growing trees which reach heights around 25m. Well known for spectacular displays of autumn foliage.
